The Crossing Arts Alliance is pleased to announce ‘Sharing the Fire’ an exhibit of collaborative, individual sculptural, and functional clay works from area potters Haddie Hadachek, Mike Weiss, Grant Boulanger, Jake Iten, Heather Kidd, Ken Omundson, and Yvette Monstad
Haddie Hadachek explains “Wood firing is an art best shared. The kiln was originally built by Ken Omundson and me in the early 2000's. We started inviting potter friends to join us for the twice per year firings. Over the years, we've had potters from all over the country but our standard crew usually comes back to fire time after time. Several of these are former interns with me at Black Bear Pottery and have become dear friends, as well.
Since we fire the kiln for at least 30 hours straight, we are spending a lot of time together on these weekends and potters love to build together so we started making these sculptures. One of the potters would make a large initial form on which all the potters would start to make additions to, carve into, change the shape of and generally transform until the end of the weekend. These collaborative sculptures are then dried slowly and Haddie does the initial firing and sets the whole thing aside until the next wood firing when the potters come together again and glaze the sculpture and load it in the wood kiln with all the pottery they have brought. While that load of sculpture and pottery is firing, we begin another and this cycle has continued for years now.”
The exhibit opens on Saturday Oct. 8th from 10am to 2pm at The Crossing Arts Gallery, located in the Franklin Arts Center, and runs through Oct. 28th. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
